WARREN, Mich. (WXYZ) – A 16-year-old student at Warren Fitzgerald High School was stabbed and killed Wednesday morning, according to Warren police.
Police say a 17-year-old girl is being held for knife-related death. The two girls knew each other and had been friends and were both straight students.
According to the victim's family, she was a member of the cross-country team, the robotics club, the color guard, the band and the National Honor Guard Society, the student council, and the promise generation.
Warren Police Commissioner William Dwyer stated that a male student was also involved in the incident, and it is possible that the victim and the suspect had a relationship with the student. He cooperates with the investigation, according to the police.
We are told that the victim was stabbed twice in the chest.
A school resource officer was on site quickly during the incident and a teacher also assisted the officer who was administering CPR to the victim.
Dwyer said they were asking for a murder warrant accusing him of homicide, but that the degree will be determined by the Macomb County District Attorney's Office.
"It's the first type of situation we've had in the school district over the last 50 years," said Dwyer. "Agents can not remember a case where a student was murdered in a Warren high school."
Superintendent Laurie Fournier issued the following statement regarding the incident:
At approximately 8:30 this morning, we received a report that a student at Fitzgerald High School had stabbed another high school student, resulting in injuries. The alleged abuser has been arrested and is in detention. The injured student was rushed to the hospital. High school is locked until further notice. We will share updates as they become available. Please note that the safety of our students and staff is our number one priority.
Students were fired for the day around 10:30. Dwyer said the school would be closed Wednesday and Thursday.
