TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – A missing University of Florida student from southwestern Miami-Dade County has been found alive, according to his family and authorities.

The Leon County Sheriff's Office said the K-9 unit found Justin Shields, 19, in a wooded area a few kilometers from the roadway on Sunday afternoon. The paramedics took him to a local hospital.

"He has been dehydrated but should recover," said a spokesman for the sheriff's office.

MPs began looking for Shields Friday after his car was found in a heavily forested area about 20 miles from the FSU campus. His wallet, keys and phone were left in the car. It had not been seen since Wednesday.

"We found Justin, and we are very grateful to all the professionals and all those who gave their time to find Justin and bring him home," said his mother, Ann Farrar, in a video on Facebook.

The Leon County Sheriff's Office has released a video of the family of shields celebrating after receiving the news.

They were in Tallahassee engaged in research. Shields is a graduate of Coral Reef High School.

Earlier on Sunday, the authorities expanded their search, adding dozens of volunteers and agents from the number of other law enforcement agencies.
