SALT LAKE CITY (News4Utah) – A student is dead and the suspect is on the run after a shootout on the campus of the University of Utah on Monday night.

The Utah University police lieutenant, Brian, said the suspect was Melvin Rowland, 37 years old.

He is described as a black man of 6 feet 3 inches and weighing 250 pounds. He was apparently wearing a gray cap, black pants, white shoes and a white hoodie. Police said he had been seen for the last time on foot heading north since the medical tours.

Police said that the student had some sort of dispute with Rowland and that at one point shots had been fired. The officers then found the woman dead in a vehicle.

Several agencies responded to the campus to help Rowland's research.
