HONOLULU – Ruth Gates, a pioneering coral reef scientist who has spent a large part of her career safeguarding fragile ecosystems and deteriorating underwater reefs, has passed away. She was 56 years old.
The University of Hawaii announced Tuesday that the researcher had died Thursday in Honolulu. A brain cancer was diagnosed in May. Gates was the director of the Institute of Marine Biology of Hawaii at the university.
Gates, also president of the International Society for Reef Studies, has been known worldwide for her idea of accelerating the evolution of corals and creating more resilient reefs.
Associated Press first wrote about its plan to replicate a "super coral" in 2015. Its goal was to develop corals that could withstand the effects of climate change.
Gates' work has been featured in the 2018 Netflix documentary "Chasing Coral."
