Social media is very present in all our lives, but the impact of that presence is an issue that we probably will not know the answer for a while.
For 17-year-old Ashlee Thomas, social media has had a huge impact on her perception of food. Good nutrition and excessive exercise were all approved by popular influencers in her diet – so she could not escape it.
Ashlee started following what they were saying frequently and loudly, as she told Allison Langdon in an excerpt from tonight's episode 60 minutes.
She started eating very "clean" and doing physical exercise as if it were a chore, as she has seen done by social media celebrities. It became an obsession, and soon, she began to starve herself of food.
Anorexia was quickly diagnosed at 14 years old. Her parents felt so helpless that they forcibly fed her.
In retaliation for her parents' help attempts, Ashlee distanced herself, often yelling hysterically.
"[It was] bursts that you just saw in the movies, "said Mr. Thomas in the preview clip with Langdon.
"You have your beloved doing it in front of you. It's pretty upsetting. "
