A university teacher was suspended Tuesday after calling police officers to a black student who had relieved herself at a previous biology conference.
Video sequence of the incident became viral on Twitter, showing police escorting a student from a busy Texas university in the San Antonio Reading Hall.
The instructor, identified by the university as Anita Moss, had asked the student to sit in a previous class, after Apurva Rawal, a student who shared the video.
"The teacher then made an effort to stop the conference early to inform our class that she found us incredibly unresponsive and disrespectful to her, and then ended the class," Rawal wrote on Twitter.
On Monday, Moss asked the student to leave when she would have entered the classroom. the student claimed.
"I have never disobeyed the student code of conduct. Not once, "said the student. "A police report is being filed [at the moment]it is only the beginning. Thanks for your help!"
The president of the University of Texas at San Antonio, Taylor Eighmy, said that Moss, who was teaching a course in anatomy and physiology, would not come back to teach him this semester.
He added that the university was investigating the incident for both discrimination and as a class management problem.
"In the end: regardless of the final results regarding the incident of yesterday, we have the obligation, as the institution, to look closely at the climate of our campus, especially for color students, and implement systemic changes to make the UTSA a more inclusive campus. Eighmy said in a statement Tuesday.
According to its website, less than 3,000 of the 32,101 students at the university are African American. Conference students are expected to return to class Monday, according to NBC News.
