Health officials are urging Minnesotans to ensure that their measles vaccines are up to date before they leave the country after the state has confirmed a third case of measles.
Last week, the Minnesota Department of Health identified a case of measles in a 24-month-old child recently returned from the Middle East, where measles is common.
The Ramsey County child has been partially vaccinated against measles, mumps and rubella. Officials said the child was probably infectious between September 6 and 14.
It was the third case of measles related to travel to Minnesota in less than six weeks.
The health department said that measles outbreaks occur in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa and South America. Officials said that anyone traveling to these areas and not fully vaccinated was at risk of contracting measles.
Measles is highly contagious and spreads easily by coughing, sneezing or even in the same room as someone who has measles.
