The Chinese Foreign Minister warned on Tuesday that the United States and China should not see themselves with a "cold war mentality" in a context of increasing trade tensions between the two countries.

The remark of Wang Yi, who is also a Chinese State Councilor, came during a meeting with former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger on the sidelines of the current meeting of the General Assembly of the United Nations. Wang warned that the two countries would suffer if Beijing and Washington met, according to a Reuters report.

"China and the United States may have competition, but should not use the Cold War mentality to see each other, and they should not fall into the trap of a zero-sum game", said Reuters.

Wang said China hoped the United States would meet Beijing half way to make sure they had "correct perception" of each other.

The two countries have been facing a trade dispute over the past two months, prompted largely by the insistence of US President Donald Trump to restore the conditions of the economic relationship between the two countries. US Trump has accused China of currency manipulation, forced technology transfers and theft of intellectual property, among other alleged offenses.

As part of the president's efforts to alter his country's trade relations with China, the Trump administration has imposed significant tariffs on Chinese imports, including import taxes of 200 billion of dollars imposed this week.

"Recently, some US forces have continually blackened China's name, creating a sense of antagonism, which has seriously damaged the atmosphere of Sino-US relations," said Reuters.
