The Italian Minister of Culture described feelings of great pride after the discovery of a treasure of hundreds of Roman coins in northern Italy. The treasure seems to be in perfect condition and brilliant – right out of the amphora.

The discovery took place last week during excavations in the basement of the theater Cressoni, in the city of Como, in the north of the country, not far from the ancient city of Novum Comum.

Dating from the end of the Roman period to the 5th century, the pieces were found hidden in an amphora. Images posted on Facebook by the Italian Ministry of Culture show that the gold coins are in excellent condition.

"We do not yet know in detail the historical and cultural significance of this discovery, but this region is a real treasure for our archeology" said the Minister of Culture, Alberto Bonisoli, in the message accompanying the images.

The discovery is one "It fills me with pride" Bonisoli added.

The Cressoni Theater was inaugurated in 1870 before becoming a cinema. Closed to the public in 1997, it was to be demolished to allow the construction of a luxury residence.
