ATHENS

A hurricane in the Mediterranean hit Greece, causing floods, cutting electricity and blocking highways in many places.

The impact of the tropical "Medicane", called Zorba, was particularly felt in the region of southern Peloponnese and around Athens, the capital.

Heavy rains and strong storm winds destroyed trees and flooded homes and workplaces.

The train service has been canceled in southern Greece, announced the General Secretariat for Civil Protection.

Firefighters also reported receiving 640 calls for help in the Peloponnese alone.

Some ships in the ports around Athens are confined to the wharf, while flights departing from the Athens International Airport have experienced delays.

In addition, three people, including one elderly couple, were reported missing on the island of Euboea in eastern Greece, officials said.

"Once again, we feel the hell," said Kostas Bakoyannis, mayor of Karpenisi, central Greece, at the Greek news agency AMNA.

"We fought the rain and the mud all night long. There is a lot of damage.

He added that a state of emergency had been declared in the areas most affected by the storm.
