A US Postal Employee Leaves His Job and Leaves Mail on the Roadside

The story erupted after worried resident Kewnoneal Bennett saw the abandoned mail on a street in Pennsauken, New Jersey last month.

He took a picture and shared it on Facebook, warning locals that their personal information was potentially "on the street" before contacting the post office to inform them of the incident.

Even though some of the mail from the pile was dated August 8, the discovery was made only on Sunday. In other words, the letters and parcels were exposed to the elements and the potential flight for several weeks.

Special Agent Scott Balfour, of the Office of the Inspector General of US Postal Services, told nj.com that the organization had managed to locate the unidentified employee, who had resigned in early September.

He told the publication that the worker's reason for emptying the mail was not known, but that the mail had been sent from the Roxborough Station Post Office in Philadelphia.

"We are not planning any further action against this individual," Balfour said.

"The post office at Roxborough Station will deliver the mail."

Mr. Bennett's message quickly became viral, attracting thousands of likes, shares and comments.

Dozens of Facebook users have expressed their indignation at the act of posti, which has been described as "juvenile", "selfish" and "dream of the identity thief".

Helen Arano, a Facebook user, said sanctions were needed. "They have to file a complaint, it's a federal crime, they leave it alone," she said.
