Archaeologists who searched an ancient Roman site in Italy have discovered the body of a child who may have died of malaria and allegedly received an alleged "vampire burial".
"I've never seen anything like it – it's extremely strange and strange," said Arizona University archaeologist David Soren, who oversees the site.
The remains of the 10-year-old girl were buried with a rock intentionally inserted into the mouth, which, according to the researchers, may have been done to prevent the corpse from coming out of its grave and infect the living.
The skeleton was found at La Necropoli dei Bambini, or the cemetery of babies, which contains a number of bodies of infants and young children who were swept away by an epidemic of malaria in the fifth century. The new discovery represents the oldest of the children found until now at the cemetery.
"Given the age of this child and his unique testimony, with the stone placed in his mouth, this represents, for the moment, an anomaly in an already abnormal graveyard," he said.Director of Xcavation, David Pickel, now at Stanford. "It also shows how unique Lugnano Cemetery is – or now, rather – as a child."
Excavations in the same cemetery have revealed other practices related to witchcraft and magic, including children buried with things such as crowsfoot, toad bones, bronze ashes cauldrons and even sacrificial puppies. Another girl's body was found with stones on her hands and feet, which the cultures of all time and the world have done to prevent the dead from coming back, like zombies.
"We know that the Romans were very concerned about this and would even go so far as to use witchcraft to prevent the evil – anything that contaminates the body – from going out," Soren said.
In 2009, another "corpse" was searched in Venice from a "vampire", probably a victim of the plague, a brick embedded in the mouth.
