The fire was reported Saturday night and affected many structures in the area, said Kristin Tinsley, Seattle's Fire Information Officer.
When firefighters arrived, they saw flames as high as 50 to 75 feet, said Tinsley.
A warehouse collapsed but no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire was not known immediately, officials said.
The building where the fire broke out would house primarily lumber, Tinsley said.
She told CNN's affiliate, KIRO-TV, that her teams were fighting the fire defensively, meaning they were not entering any of the burning structures.
"At the present time, about five structures are involved.One of them has collapsed and burned.We are trying to actively control what is happening here today. "she said. "We are working to contain the fire, to control it – we do not call it under control yet – but we do not see it will spread beyond what it is right now . "
One of the buildings located at the back of the warehouse, where the fire would have originated, would have sheltered propane tanks, Tinsley said.
"… So we have been actively trying to make sure that this building does not ignite, it has been damaged, but for now we have not received any information that these propane tanks would have exploded, "she said.
Local residents
Tinsley said residents would be alerted if evacuations were needed and recommended that members of the public keep their doors and windows closed to prevent smoke from entering their homes.
"I was about 800 meters to the west right here doing a barbecue and I could see the heat and the light from the fire," said Conal Groom. "When I came here, the closer I got, the more you could see heat, yellow light and fire."
Groom said that it was heartbreaking: "It's terrible, it's our neighborhood, it's terrible to see."
