It was only when his application was rejected that Stevenson, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, understood the mistake. The rejection of the application resulted in Stevenson having to postpone his project to New York, which according to the same report was his "dream break", and went to the US Embassy in London to prove that was not a threat to security.

After several intense interviews, Stevenson, a native of Falkirk, Scotland, obtained a full visa. However, the US authorities had informed her that there was no guarantee that the visa would arrive before her flight. In addition, he was advised to book his trip at a later date.
