The woman accused of fatally poisoning her husband with eye drops shot him in the head with a crossbow, officials said.

Police have reopened an investigation into the strange incident of millionaire Stephen Clayton and his 52-year-old wife, Lana, two years ago.

Lana Clayton told the police that she was having trouble loading a crossbow. She says she took her to the room where her husband was sleeping. She then claimed that the device was accidentally extinguished and that a piece of the bow called "the lock" struck at the back of the head . He woke up screaming, but miraculously, he was not seriously injured.

Crossbow expert Manny Circa told Inside Edition that if you maintain safety on the crossbow, it will not fire.

Stephen Clayton told investigators that he "did not believe that she was trying to kill him," according to documents obtained by Inside Edition.

Police say Lana Clayton has now confessed to killing her husband by putting drops in his eyes. The chemical can be deadly if swallowed.

"For several days, he started closing his body," said Optometrist Dr. Elyse Briscoe at Inside Edition. "You can not breathe after a while, your heart is closing and you end up in a coma."

The couple lived in a million dollar enclave on Lake Wylie, South Carolina. Stephen Clayton's funeral took place in the yard before toxicology reports indicated that he had been poisoned.

Frank Keith and Ken Stanford were at the funeral.

Keith told Inside Edition that she was "stoic" at the funeral.

Sanford added, "This is part of the mystery. He has always seemed happy to be grateful for his success, grateful to be alive, grateful to be in the community and that is one more reason to us, I think. "
