A St. Louis white woman dubbed "Key Fob Kelly" by social media users defends her actions in a new interview after videos showing she was trying to prevent a black man from entering in his own apartment became viral.
Hilary Mueller told KTVI-TV, a Fox affiliate in St. Louis, that she was simply trying to follow the condominium guidelines for the residents.
"My only goal was to follow the direction that I had repeatedly given the board of directors of our condominium association," Mueller said. "And this is to never allow access to a person you do not know."
D'Arreion Toles recorded his attempts to enter his apartment complex, the Elder Shirt Lofts, after returning home late from work on Saturday. Mueller can be seen standing in the doorway, asking which unit Toles lives in and seeing his keychain.
"It's not your building, you're not the owner," Toles explains in the video before overtaking her. Mueller continues to follow Toles up to his loft on the fourth floor and asks who he's going to see and why he's here.
Mueller claims that Toles was trying to get into the building. She said that the main door was open because she was walking her dog.
"I do not think I've done anything wrong," Mueller said. "I have supported the request of me to its fullest extent."
Toles asked him to stop following him but she continued while he was using his keys to open his door.
Toles told ABC News on Monday that Mueller had called 911 after the meeting. Sgt. Keith Barrett of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Service confirmed that a 911 call had been made but that no report had been written.
Toles posted the videos on his Facebook page and they have been viewed nearly 8 million times. He wrote that the videos show what it is "to be a black man in America" and "it is America in 2018".
Mueller has been repeatedly labeled "racist" on social media, an assertion that she vehemently denies.
"It's absolutely wrong and heartbreaking," Mueller said. "These are words that really cut deep."
Tribeca-STL, Mueller's employer, who manages the real estate, said in a statement posted on its website that the company was aware of the video and had been fired.
"The Tribeca-STL family is a minority business that includes employees and residents from many racial backgrounds," the statement said. "We are proud of this fact and never defend racism or racial profiling in our business."
This is the latest viral video of a white person threatening to call the police on a black person for her to perform her daily tasks.
Internet users quickly linked the plot to "Permit Patty," who threatened to call 911 an 8-year-old black girl who sold bottled water without a license in California.
ABC News has contacted Elders Shirt Lofts for a copy of the condo guidelines. The president of the luxury building replied, "My lawyer advised me not to make any statements and to not share any documents at the moment."
