A Tennessee woman had a massive cyst removed after living in pain for years.
"I'm still in a difficult battle, but it's worth it," said Ashley Walden, a 32-year-old mother of three.
Five years ago, Walden went to the doctor when she had pain in her abdomen. His doctor diagnosed him with a benign ovarian cyst.
However, the pain continued to worsen and Walden began to gain weight. In the space of a few months, she seemed six months pregnant.
"I did two pregnancy tests," Walden said. "They came back negative. I ended up in the ER because I was having so much pain. It was at this point that they discovered that the cyst had reached a growth spurt.
Walden met Dr. Shana Dowell at NorthCrest Medical Center, who told her that she needed an immediate surgery.
"She was walking down the hall and could barely walk," Dowell said.
Finally, a 20-pound cyst was removed from Walden.
"I'm very grateful to him for taking it out," Walden said. "I am here today for my children because of her."
Walden only wishes that she took care of the cyst sooner.
"It's not worth putting your health at risk," Walden said. "One day, it may be too late."
Dowell has stated that ovarian cysts are relatively common and that most are harmless. Symptoms include abdominal pain, fullness or heaviness in the abdomen or bloating. She encouraged women who have problems to talk to their doctors and arrange regular checkups.
Walden focuses on healing for his children.
"It's been two years that I can spend time with my kids," Walden said. "I want to go back to 100% for them."
