A California highway police officer was injured and a woman died Saturday morning after her car exploded on Interstate 101 in Sausalito, officials said.

Officers were traveling south on Interstate 101 around 8 am, near Spencer Avenue, when they saw that a vehicle had skidded and was blocking the slow lane, said the officer. agent Andrew Barclay, CHP spokesperson.


The police parked behind the broken down vehicle and turned on their headlights. They could not move the vehicle, so they installed flares and closed the taxiways.

While they were securing the scene, a Toyota Corolla turned around and started heading towards them. One of the officers was about 100 feet behind the first vehicle that had skidded and the other officer behind the patrol car, Barclay said.


The officer behind the patrol car saw the Toyota approaching him and plunged into the back seat of the patrol car just as the Toyota crashed on it, Barclay said. .

He was transported to the Marin General Hospital with moderate injuries.

The driver of the vehicle, identified only as a woman, was taken to the hospital where she died as a result of her injuries.

The other CHP officer was not injured.

A man driving the first car that was out was also unharmed, Barclay said.

"Fortunately, when our officers arrived on the scene, he was walking in his vehicle," added Barclay.

Two lanes southbound on Interstate 101 remained closed around 11:20 am. The authorities are investigating the causes of the accident.
