A South Carolina woman accused of murder last week in the poisoning of her husband shot her in the head with a crossbow two years ago while he was sleeping, according to police records.
"He woke up screaming and bleeding from the injury," said a 2016 report from the York County Sheriff's Office.
The May 2016 shootout was deemed accidental and Steven Clayton, 64, told the police that he "did not believe his wife was trying to kill him," according to police records. But investigators are looking into the incident again after his wife, 52-year-old Lana Sue Clayton, confessed to killing him with eye drops last week.
"We are conducting a comprehensive review of all events concerning the relationship between the accused and the victim, and we will examine the 2016 relationship and incident," said Attorney Kevin Brackett.
Steven Clayton was found dead on July 21st. Authorities would have initially thought that he had died of a fall, but an autopsy detected large amounts of tetrahydrozoline, a chemical found in eye drops over the counter, in his body. Police said Lana Sue Clayton had confessed to poisoning her husband with the chemical, The herald reported.
She told the police that the shooting had occurred after she had fought to load the crossbow herself and brought her upstairs to ask for help from her husband. She said that it was an accident.
