An armed abduction suspect under investigation by the FBI was killed Thursday night near Miami International Airport after firing several police officers with an assault rifle, officials said.
No details were provided regarding the identity of the suspect or the abduction.
Police responded at an intersection near the airport around 22 hours. Thursday, shots were exchanged with the shooter, reported WSVN-TV, subsidiary of Miami FOX.
Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez was attending a late budget hearing when he announced the news that a gunman with an "AK-47" had died after exchanging shots with the police.
In a video taken from a nearby balcony, gunshots can be heard with a woman shouting "Oh my God, oh my God!"
"[It sounded like] shots, "said a man in the newspaper. "A lot of shots. Boum boom boom. Like a machine gun, like an AK-47.
Alma Aguirre, a woman who lives near the shooting, said she was watching the scene from her balcony.
"It was like a war," she said in Spanish, noting that police and helicopters were following the suspect's vehicle.
The FBI was working on the case with the Miami police and the Miami-Dade police during the shooting, the Miami Herald reported.
"The suspect in this investigation fled the scene. And he was armed, "FBI spokesman Brian Waterman told reporters early Friday. [the suspect] has been involved in an investigation into hate crimes.
A spokesman for the Miami-Dade police told the Herald that there had been a lawsuit, but no officer or spectator had been injured.
