ALBUQUERQUE, NM – A VIP Spa client in Albuquerque who developed an infection prompted the state to warn other clients who received facial care or other services to get tested for HIV, hepatitis B and Hepatitis C.
The state health department issued a warning after the inspectors of several agencies Friday night: "Epidemiologist Michael Landen said that problems with storing, handling and disposing of needles had arisen at the spa of 809 Tijeras NW.
A vampire facial is a procedure in which a provider pulls about two teaspoons of blood and uses a centrifuge to isolate platelets. The material is then injected into the face to rejuvenate the skin.
People who received injection services in May and June are particularly concerned, but "we also want anyone who has received a vampire facial or injection-related service from VIP Spa to come at any time . "Landen said.
A spa representative did not respond to requests for comment on Tuesday.
VIP Spa was closed because it does not have a state-imposed "settlement license", according to a cease-fire order issued Friday. According to the Department of Regulations and Licensing, the license was in effect between September 2011 and March 2013.
The spa will remain closed until it corrects the violations discovered during the inspection and is re-inspected, said department spokeswoman Bernice Geiger.
The state offers "free and confidential laboratory tests and counseling" at the Midtown Public Health Unit at 2400 Wellesley NE. It is open from 08:30 to 16:30.
Landen said that he did not know how many customers could be in danger.
"We do not have access to a traditional (or other) appointment system, so we have no way of answering that question," Landen said.
He said the spa had also injected botox, but he did not know what other services he was offering needles.
The inspection was carried out by the Department of Health, the State Regulatory and Licensing Department and the Council of Barbers and Cosmetologists.
