The Seattle Mariners have been playing at Safeco Field since the start of the 1999 season. This will change in 2019. They will not budge, but the stadium will have a new name for 2019. Forbes reports that T-Mobile has obtained the naming rights.
In 2017, it was announced that sailors would not renew their expired contract with Safeco Insurance. The $ 40 million, 20-year contract expired after the last season. Last week, the "Safeco" sign was removed (seattletimes.com contains photos).
Forbes reports further that the new rights transaction is worth $ 6 million a year.
The rights to name a stadium are such a fun thing for me. Of course, many more sports enthusiasts know the word "Safeco" than before the match played by the Mariners at Safeco Field, but should we believe that the name of this stadium has allowed Safeco Insurance to earn $ 40 million more than these last 20 years if they have not secured naming rights? I'm not sure anyone can ever convince me that one person chose Safeco rather than another insurance company because of the Mariners.
It does not matter, that's how business goes and, hey, they can spend their money as they wish. T-Mobile now takes the name of baseball sailors. It does not have to be a "pitch", so I guess it's the options:
- T-Mobile Park
- T-Mobile Field
- T-Mobile Ballpark
- T-Mobile Stadium
Go with T-Mobile Park, right? I like that one.
