DETROIT – A cancer-related herbicide has been found in more than two dozen popular cereals and popular snack bars, according to a new report released Wednesday.

Glyphosate, the main ingredient of Roundup, was found in 26 of the 28 products tested by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), at levels "above those that EWG scientists consider to be a protection of the environment. children's health ".

EGW, an environmental organization, had already presented similar results.

Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Monsanto's Roundup, the most widely used herbicide in the United States. Each year, according to the GTE, more than 250 million pounds of glyphosate are sprayed on US crops.

Quaker and General Mills, however, conclude that the products are safe and that there is no reason to worry.

"The tests detected glyphosate in 28 samples of conventional oat products. All of the samples, except for two of the 28, had glyphosate levels above the health benchmark of the electronic working group, "said the group in the study.

In a statement, Quaker said, "The eWG report artificially creates a" security level "for glyphosate that is separate from those established by the responsible regulators for the purpose of making any of the newspapers. "

The International Agency for Research on Cancer has determined that glyphosate is "probably carcinogenic to humans" and the Environmental Protection Agency has set a level of safety for this potentially hazardous chemical .

"I do not think people should become hysterical," Sarah Evans, an assistant professor at Mount Sinai's Icahn School of Medicine, told CNN. "But people must be really aware of where their food comes from and what goes into their food."

Monsanto, the manufacturer of Roundup, strongly disagrees with the finding that glyphosate is a probable carcinogen and notes that for four decades EPA has consistently supported the safe and effective use of glyphosate.

Last week, a court ordered Monsanto to pay nearly $ 78 million to a man who claims his terminal cancer was caused by a Roundup exposure. Hundreds of other cases are going on in court.
