The midfielder of the Bilal Powell Jets was placed late in the season after a neck injury requiring surgery. Head coach Todd Bowles said the end of his career was also possible. It happened in a room that was not so bad at the time, which makes it almost scary.
Powell was injured on a tackle by Vikings LB Anthony Barr in the second quarter of Sunday's loss, and you'd have a hard time saying something was wrong. Powell sat down almost immediately after the shot and headed for the sideline. (This is the second video here.)
Bowles did not give much details about the nature of Powell's injury, other than the fact that it is a wound to a disc and will require surgery. "It's possible" that this could spell the end of Powell's career, Bowles said, although this is only known after the operation. Bowles revealed that Powell had had a recurring injury, but that "this time it was just bad."
Powell, who turns 30 on Saturday, is 10th in the list of hurried jets. He has accumulated 3446 yards and 15 touchdowns in eight seasons, all with the Jets. He is a free player after this season. Even if he is medically capable of playing football, he will have to convince a team to do it.
In his absence, the Jets backfield will consist of Isaiah Crowell and rookie Trenton Cannon.
