OAKLAND, Calif. – Move, Morten Andersen: There's a new leader in unprecedented points in the NFL.
Adam Vinatieri, an Indianapolis Colts kicker, beat Andersen when he scored a 25-yard 29 second first leg against the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. Vinatieri needed five points to surpass Andersen's 2,544 career points.
The party stopped briefly and many of Vinatieri 's teammates met him on the pitch and congratulated him. Vinatieri tied Andersen with an extra point and 26 yards in the first quarter.
It was possible that Vinatieri waited after the Colts' week off to overthrow Andersen, injured in the groin on the first of his two missed runs in the week-long game against Buffalo. Vinatieri did not practice Wednesday before testing practice training on Thursday.
Passing Andersen, who was in first place since retiring in 2007, is just another success for Vinatieri, which has probably become the first round of the Professional Football Hall of Fame. Vinatieri, 45, edged Andersen for most of his career goals on Sept. 30 against Houston.
Vinatieri, who played at NCAA Division 2 in the state of South Dakota, began his professional career by making a stop in the now-defunct NFL Europe before having a chance against the New England Patriots in 1996.
Vinatieri had his first big moment when he managed the biggest kick in the history of the NFL: a 45-yard stint in a snowstorm to bring the Patriots to overtime and then defeated the Raiders in the playoffs in January 2002. The New England Dynasty. Vinatieri scored 27 wins, including Super Bowl XXXVI and XXXVIII.
He also scored 44 consecutive goals in the NFL, a series that ended in the 2016 season. He made at least 80% of his attempts in 16 of his 23 seasons.
Vinatieri spent the first 10 years of his career in New England, where he totals 1,158 points before signing with the Colts as a free agent in 2006.
