The allegations of abuse first appeared in June 2017, when a person identified as a close friend of Reidy-Russell accused Russell, via social media, of "having mentally and physically assaulted him" ".

Russell called the claim "false and offensive" in a statement.

Reidy-Russell filed for divorce two weeks after the charge of abuse, but declined to cooperate with Major League Baseball, which was investigating the domestic violence charge.
