KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) – An Afghan official said at least five policemen were killed when their checkpoint was attacked by insurgents in the northwestern Badghis province.

Abdul Aziz Beg, chairman of the provincial council, said three other policemen were wounded and another arrested by the Taliban on Saturday morning in Qadis district.

Beg added that the shooting had lasted about an hour and had also claimed victims among the Taliban, without providing an exact figure.

Taliban insurgents have claimed responsibility for the attack in Qadis, claiming to have seized ammunition at the checkpoint.

The Taliban have taken control of nearly half of the country in recent years and have intensified their attacks against the security forces.
