FEDEX FIEL – They needed that.
After a tumultuous week in which headphones and Hollywood dominated the conversation, the Redskins needed this victory over the Carolina Panthers.
It was not always pretty and by the end of the match he seemed to escape, but Jay Gruden's team was showing determination in a place where many expected him to be. They lie down.
"I do not think anyone can enjoy success all the time, you will face adversity and we must meet him," said Gruden at the conclusion of the 23-17 victory. "It was great to see our guys bounce back."
The last time the Redskins fans saw Burgundy and gold, the team had just been dominated by the Saints. The secondary player played poorly as Drew Brees scored over 360 yards and conceded several big games for touchdowns. Monday's crisis in New Orleans resulted in a difficult week in Ashburn. A series of media reports then challenged the team and cornerback Josh Norman.
He played a big role in making mistakes in New Orleans, then went on Twitter with Saints WR Michael Thomas. After that, former Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall hinted that Norman was too focused on his television career after the NFL to play his best football.
Whether the "Hollywood" criticism confuses Norman or not, he reacts decisively by intercepting and provoking Carolina as a way of escaping.
"This week was a little different, I'm not going to lie, people came from everywhere," he said.
After the Saints game, Norman explained that he had called a team meeting to clear the air with high school. The blown blankets could not continue if the Redskins returned to the winning parties, and Norman wanted to change things. Maybe the meeting helped.
"Everything we do, we do as a unit, as a group.Whatever external noises, we need to gather outside of ourselves," Norman said. "And we have to come together now."
This formula worked well for Norman and, for most of the game, for the Redskins.
The offensive played well in the first half, but it still struggled to score goals in the second half. After five games, the Redskins only scored one touchdown in the second half, resulting in a loss to Saints.
Newton led the Panthers on the field for a possible TD winner. The former MVP had four chances to win the match, but the defense held up well. Newton loses for the first time in his career against Washington, bringing his all-time record to 4-1.
But not all games are created equal.
Of course, the Redskins broke a five-game losing streak against Carolina. Washington has not beaten the Panthers since 2006.
Greater than that, however, the Gruden team has demonstrated its ability to defend itself from a demoralizing defeat. Too many Redskins teams from the past have fallen back under the pressure of bad losses and outside noise.
This Redskins team does not have.
"We've been tested and you have to answer," Redskins WR Paul Richardson said after the game.
The high-priced free agent of this dead season, Richardson played well against Carolina, scoring a touchdown in the first period. It also includes the enormity of victory.
"I think even losing a match like we did last week, we were put to the test as men to allow us to bounce, lock, focus and make this game important, and we did it. "
There is much to criticize and question the victory of the Redskins. Offensive struggles in the second half are important and quarterback Alex Smith has not played enough yet.
The Redskins have however won, and sometimes the victory is enough.
Remember, they needed that.
