MISSION HILLS (NEWS 8) – Black Friday is over, but buyers can still find great deals this weekend at the Saturday for Small Business.
American Express launched the local store event in 2010 to encourage people to buy in their community. The credit card services company said that since the launch of Small Business Saturday, US customers have reported spending a total of about $ 85 billion at independent retailers.
According to American Express, for every dollar spent at a local store, 67 cents remain in the community.
In a San Diego bakery, superstar pastry chefs worked Friday on a masterpiece designed to attract shoppers – a life-size spice bread shop. "We are used to the challenge, but this one is abnormally big. It's not small, "said Jennifer Duncan, winner of several awards for Food Network Cake Wars and Ridiculous Cakes. "It's probably the biggest project we've undertaken in this bakery."
Duncan is co-owner of the Cake Bakery in Mission Hills and is currently building a five foot by eight foot gingerbread store with 600 pounds of ingredients. Children will be able to walk around 4010 Goldfinch Street on Small Business Day and create gingerbread cookies.
"We are not a big-box bakery and we cook everything from scratch. All the people you see in the bakery prepare what you eat, "said Duncan.
Small Business Saturday has events in several communities in San Diego and the country.
"They are really the backbone of our economy in this country and keep our community so vibrant and unique, and that's what defines our community," said Isabel Clark, Saturday's Small Business Coalition.
When shoppers come to Mission Hills M-Theory Music stores, they'll feel nostalgic.
"We are very few, but we are proud of our office and the store itself," said Chris M., employee. "The Saturday of the small business is an incredible opportunity to support each other, it's like a big family in San Diego and Mission Hills. "
According to American Express, in 2013, more than 1,400 people and organizations registered as neighborhood champions to bring their communities together at events and activities held on Saturdays during the small business – and this number continues to grow.
In 2017, there were more than 7,200 neighborhood champions in all 50 states.
Ocean Beach, North Park, Hillcrest and Mission Hills are among the local communities in San Diego County that host "Shop Local" events this Saturday.
Most Saturday events for small businesses take place from 11am to 4pm. To learn more about the local shop, click here.
