BOSTON – Now that he has rebuilt his record, Chris Sale needs to repair his mechanics before his next start in the AL Division series.

Sale defeated eight of four innings and two-thirds of his last lap before the Baltimore Orioles picked up a division on Wednesday's double with a 10-3 win over the Boston Red Sox.

"It's what these beginnings were for – building blocks," Sale said. "I feel like I have enough work and have made enough progress to be ready."

But the southpaw needs to fix his delivery and the loss of command and speed, which was mostly in the 90 mph range.

"As soon as I pulled him out, he was in the video room," said Alex Cora, head of the Red Sox. "It seems that something is going on mechanically, it does not fly his hips as usual, we do not have too much time."

Boston won the opening match 19-3, inflicting the Orioles a 112th franchise record. The Red Sox were 16-3 against Baltimore this year.

"It was a lousy match," said Baltimore manager Buck Showalter. "I wish we scored nine extra points and beat them 19-3, which is a crazy game, it's a great club out there."

One of the top 107-52 championships, Boston opens the home league series on Oct. 5 against the New York Yankees or Oakland.

The sale left after giving the go-ahead to Adam Jones, doubling RBI who made it 3-2 in the fifth. He shot 92 shots, allowing three runs and four shots.

The sale was limited to a six-week start due to inflammation of the left shoulder, but gradually increased its number of shots in four outings. He had early control problems, hitting two batters on sliders in the first run while allowing two runs.

Trey Mancini managed a single-break of Matt Barnes (6-4) with two points in a seventh and led three innings. Tanner Scott (3-2) made 2 2/3 innings of relief in one inning, and Paul Fry pitched three defensive innings for his second stop.

In the first game, JD Martinez collected three of the 22 hits of the season in Boston, including a three-point homer with a total of 12 RBI points. The Orioles (46-112) broke the franchise record of 1939 St. Louis Browns went 43-111.

"Man, he does not leave anyone to anyone," Xander Bogaerts raged after racing in four innings to reach 100 RBIs for the first time in his career and lead Boston to a 19-3 victory.

The Red Sox have recorded five homers and nine doubles and tied their biggest result this season. The 14 additional base shots were the biggest in the majors this year and the most important for Boston since 1950.

In the composition of Tuesday's rain, David Price (16-7) stabilized after a premature start on his last start before the playoffs. He allowed three runs – all in the second inning – six hits and three walks, eliminating six points before starting with a 10-3 lead after five.

"I probably was not able to get out of this game," said Price, who is expected to start the second game of the AL division series against the New York Yankees or Oakland. "Back up … was great."

Rafael Devers had four hits and six RBIs, including two homers, and Mookie Betts had two hits to bring his batting average to .346. Betts also stole a base, making him the second player in Red Sox history with at least 30 homers and 30 bases stolen in one season.

Ryan Meisinger (2-1) has only one since his first start since being a sophomore at Radford University, allowing five runs and four hits.

SURPRISED VISITOR

Jerry Remy, a color analyst at Red Sox TV, visited the booth and was briefly aired because he wanted to thank the fans for the cards and letters he is once again receiving for the treatment of cancer.

Remy, 65, has had many recurrences with the disease. He was first diagnosed with lung cancer in 2008.

He plans to return to a limited role next season.

"I think the best way to describe it is: I'm not going away," he said. "But these will be limits, I will not travel anymore."

The 22 circuits of Bogaerts are also a personal best. … Martinez's career record for RBIs was 104 last year. … Martinez's 42nd circuit was most often tied with Dick Stuart (1963) by a player in his first year with the Red Sox. … The six points produced by Devers were a career high.

EMERGENCY PITCH

Orioles league player Jace Peterson started the eighth game in the first game, focusing mainly on the 90-mph range. He allowed four runs and six hits, but he could have come out with less damage if he remembered to first cover a bottom player on the right side. Two more shots barely escaped the investigators, including one who took off Corban Joseph's glove.

Peterson struck off Christian Vazquez to end the inning.

TRAINER ROOM

Red Sox: Nurse Eduardo Nunez, who has not played since September 19 due to hamstring pain, ran into the outfield with a team sports coach who was watching the games. Cora said that he would leave on Friday and play on the third Sunday.

Orioles: RHP David Hess (3-10, 5.14 ERA) should start the match against Houston on Thursday. RHP Gerrit Cole (15-5, 2.92) should go to the AL West Championship.
