After the violation of Facebook, what can you do to protect yourself?

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) –

On Friday, Facebook announced that a security flaw related to its "View As" feature had compromised 50 million accounts and up to 90 million users.

Adam Levin, a cybersecurity expert, spoke to Michael Finney of ABC7 News about what you can do to protect yourself.

The first step is to reconnect to Facebook, said Levin, and to make sure you reconnect to any application to which you connect with the help of your Facebook credentials.

Indeed, Facebook has reset the "access tokens" that people use to log in, but new tokens will not take effect if you do not reconnect.

Levin said people need to be aware of their "cyber hygiene" and take the following steps:

  • Create long, strong passwords for all your digital accounts.
  • Use two-factor authentication with Facebook and other sites.
  • Try to limit the information you provide on social networking sites because this information may be used against you (for example, to find answers to your security questions at other sites).
  • Do not honestly answer the security questions used for your login credentials – lie as a superhero to prevent attackers from guessing the answers to these questions.
  • Monitor all your sites because the sooner you will know if there is a problem or if you have been hacked, the better.
  • Manage the damage by making sure or taking other precautions to protect yourself.
