Jakarta, Indonesia – Indonesian Air Lion announced that he had lost contact with an airliner connecting Jakarta to an island off Sumatra on Monday morning. A search and rescue agency launched for the Boeing 737-800 said the JT-610 flight had crashed into the sea, the Reuters news agency reported.

"It was confirmed that the plane had crashed," Yusuf Latif, a spokesman for the agency, told the news agency. Latif said the plane lost contact 13 minutes after takeoff.

The plane left Jakarta on Monday for Pangkal Pinang around 6:20. Danang Mandala Prihantoro, spokesman for Lion Air, said: "We can confirm that one of our flights has lost touch, his position can not yet be determined."

It was not known immediately how many people were aboard the JT-610, reports BBC News.

Lion Air is one of the youngest and largest airlines in Indonesia serving dozens of domestic and international destinations. In 2013, one of his Boeing 737-800 missed the runway by landing on the island of Bali, where he crashed into the sea without killing any of the 108 people on board .

Flight Tracking Site Flightradar24 tweeted "Preliminary data show an increase in speed and a decrease in altitude during the last transmission." They posted an image the flight path after take-off.
