(KGTV) – EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) – An aircraft made an emergency landing on Friday on the Interstate 8 westbound, according to the California Highway Patrol.
A student pilot and instructor from the California Flight Academy was over El Cajon and had engine problems around 11:15 am, the CHP reported.
The men were trying to land at Gillespie Field but were forced to land on the freeway. The instructor took the controls in hand and landed safely in alleyways near the second avenue.
No cars were hit and no one was injured. The plane, a Piper aircraft based in El Cajon, remained intact.
The pilot and the instructor pushed the plane on the right shoulder.
Officers shut off the I-8 exit ramp westbound on Mollison Avenue due to the state of the aircraft emergency.
Jim Bettencourt, PSC officer, said the PSC would be in contact with the National Transportation Safety Board to determine the best way to remove the aircraft.
"Try not to stop and slow down," Bettencourt told drivers in the area.
