Alabama will face the country's No. 3 team on Saturday. On the road. In one of the most hostile environments of college football.
And is still favored by two touchdowns.
The Crimson Tide has returned to its excellent ways of forming a historically dominant team in 2018. The transition from a big to an elite was boosted by the emergence of Tua Tagavailoa as a Heisman Trophy favorite. The second-year quarterback did not play much because of Alabama's erratic winning streak, but was electric on the field; 25 touchdown passes, a success rate of 70.4% and – holy shit – zero interception.
But if a team can end Tide's race, it's LSU. The Tigers faced a series of murders in early 2018, knocking down three of the top 10 teams en route to a 7-1 record. This left Ed Orgeron's team at the only program with a realistic plan that prevented Bama from winning the SEC West title – but as a 15-point loser, a Saturday win would be the career's biggest success. d'Orgeron and LSU's biggest win since his 2007 national title win.
Unsurprisingly, S & P + ranks Bama as the best team in the country. The figures are not as favorable for LSU, which comes in 13th position. This may be due to the devaluation of victories on the former top 10 teams, Miami and Auburn, which are now a bit nil. Or perhaps it is because the numbers do not quantify the Cajun rage that motivates the Tigers beyond their means and leads to big wins on the Bayou.
Yet it is Bama, who has generally defeated LSU, but rarely in a shocking way. Tide by 11.

I think we can slow them down. We are 21st in the country to stop the race according to S & P. We have also held them on the sidelines of their average per game over the past two years in the field. I am comfortable with that.
Where things go wrong is their passing attack because of the quality of Tua. He is able to follow progressions, deliver specific balls on the field and make checks as needed. I was blown away from watching the movie. I knew the numbers stood out. But the film makes it all the more impressive.
Is Joe Burrow's experience against Alabama a good trait to have?
Listen to me. Alabama is not just a team; it's a specter hovering over the college football season, a demoralizing force that destroys your village and soiled the land behind it.
Only Burrow knows it because he has never played before. He will have a little more confidence, a little more bragging than a player who only managed 10 points against Alabama in 2017. Or is silenced in 2016. The freshman starter has a lot of upcoming bragade game of his football career. The question is how much will come out of it?
