ALBANY – Herald readers will notice a number of advertisements in today's edition commemorating October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month and recognizing the South Georgia Cancer Coalition and Horizons Community Solutions.
This journal has long collaborated with this organization worthy of the name in its efforts to fight cancer through awareness and programs that have a direct impact on cancer patients in our community. And although there is no "pink paper" this year, The Herald will contribute, as in the past, to a portion of the ad sales generated for today's edition and throughout the month. October, Horizons and the Coalition Against Cancer.
"The important thing is awareness," said Scot Morrissey, publisher of Herald. "We want to do our part to increase awareness of breast cancer so that more women – and men – participate in screenings that could very well save their lives." But we also want the community to be aware of the work of Horizons Community Solutions and the South Georgia Cancer Coalition and the incredible and vital work they do.
"We hope our readers will take the time to slow down their busy lives and recognize Horizons' tremendous effort to educate and serve this community, an effort that continues each day. We appreciate the support of our community partners and advertisers, and we join Horizons and the Cancer Coalition to help us in this ongoing battle.
The Cancer Coalition of South Georgia has been involved in the fight against cancer in the region for almost 15 years – and this important work continues. By working with other community partners to improve areas such as education, housing and workforce development, the organization hopes to help the community create a culture sustainable well-being.
The key partners and sources of support that have partnered with the Coalition / Cancer Horizons over the past fifteen years to educate and support the community – and, therefore, to "change the face" of cancer – include:
– the state of Georgia;
– local and elected representatives;
– Phoebe Putney Health System, South Georgia Medical Center, Tift Regional Health System, Miller County Hospital and other regional health care organizations;
– primary care and specialty care physicians and other providers;
– state and local public health services and other bodies;
– Emory Prevention Research Center / Emory University and other universities;
– companies in the region;
– local school districts, churches, community organizations and other stakeholders;
– private and business foundations;
– Countless people.
Recognized nationally for its programs and research, the work of the Coalition Against Cancer continues as a division of Horizons. Key programs and services include screening and early detection; patient navigation; research in prevention / risk reduction; community outreach and education, and support to local cancer patients.
"What we do is a small part of this ongoing fight, but the way you win this kind of fight is to make sure that everyone – every stakeholder group – does what it can." Morrissey said.
