Albert Almora Jr. scored a double for a basic gaffe, and David Bote followed with another double at the top of the 10th inning on Thursday night as the Cubs won a 6-4 win over the Nationals.
The victory allowed the Cubs to be led to four and a half games over the Brewers of the Central League.
Almora was caught on second base in the eighth inning just as Kris Bryant scored the knotter on a ground stop, but he doubled Jimmy Cordero with a double in the 10th.
Bote entered the game as a defensive substitute before touching his double in the center right.
With two outs, Taylor Davis, recently promoted, hit a single in the right field to score Bote.
Pedro Strop, who threw 20 shots to win Wednesday in Milwaukee (6-4), shot a perfect ninth to win.
Jesse Chavez, who played his 22nd game since joining the Cubs on July 19, worked on Matchday 10 to win the match.
The Cubs heaved a collective sigh of relief as left-handed player Ian Happ shot a shot from Wilmer Difo's line and the shot from the third finished eighth.
Counter-Cubs tied the match at the top of eighth, after being selected by Wilson Contreras to score Kris Bryant, but Daniel Murphy took second place to finish the inning.
Javier Baez was accused of throwing a mistake that led to three unearned points in the fourth.
Baez, starting from the third base, was stationed in a shallow right field and ran away to put a pitcher through Bryce Harper with a withdrawal. Baez made an unbalanced throw as his momentum carried him to the right line.
The Baez throw, however, defeated pitcher Kyle Hendricks at first base for what was considered a mistake. Anthony Rendon followed with an RBI double, and Mark Reynolds started a two-point home run that landed on the center of the Cubs in the center left to give the Nationals a 3-2 lead.
The Cubs rallied to tie the match at the top of the fifth. Murphy led with a single and finally scored on a sacrifice flight by Zobrist.
The Cubs took a 2-0 lead in the third when Baez hit a singles and scored on a brace from Anthony Rizzo. Ben Zobrist followed with a single to score Rizzo.
Left-back goalkeeper Kyle Schwarber did not start because of stiffness on the back, but he came out of the bench to hit and shoot.
