Alberta sees first flu death as health system faces tough, early season

A Calgary resident died of the flu this year, marking the first flu-related death in Alberta for the 2018-19 season.

Alberta Health Services confirmed Thursday that a person with a confirmed laboratory-confirmed influenza case had died.

This comes a day after a Calgary emergency room physician told Global News that the region could expect to see "many more hospitalizations" because of the virus that year.

AHS reported that on Thursday, 1,411 cases of influenza A were confirmed in Alberta, including 922 in the Calgary area and 13 cases of strain B.

A total of 290 people were admitted to the hospital on Thursday because of laboratory-confirmed influenza cases, including 200 in the Calgary area.

AHS said to date, 944,611 people have been vaccinated against influenza.
