BOSTON – Alex Cora, coach of the Boston Red Sox, was sent off from Saturday's opening game of the American League series against the Houston Astros after barking in front of the referee from the James Hoye Plateau as a result of a strike on sockets.
The ejection took place just after the fifth inning ended. The round ended when Hoye ranged left-field player Andrew Benintendi of the Red Sox with a third shot.
After a 3-2 run on five shots, Benintendi decided not to score the sixth goal, while a fast ball at 97.8 mph from Justin Verlander (Astros) was spinning towards the outside edge of the strike zone. According to observers, the balloon actually crossed the plate just around the corner, on the outside.
The Red Sox were clearly angry by the punch. Cora started shouting at Hoye from the canoe.
Immediately after the strike call, Benintendi also stepped out of the batter's box to head for Boston's first goal canoe, striking his bat, elbow pad and helmet violently. As soon as both players hit the ground, Red Sox third baseman Carlos Febles came for his run to catch the batter before he could say anything to Hoye.
Cora stayed in the dugout for a few moments. Finally, while Boston raises Joe Kelly came to take his sixth training round, Cora came to the field and started screaming about Hoye and his team leader, Joe West, who had come to remedy the situation.
After trying to plead her case in front of Hoye, Cora finally returned to the dugout canoe and headed to the clubhouse. The bench coach, Ron Roenicke, took his place.

It was the second time that Cora, the freshman of Boston, was expelled this season. He was also thrown on August 3 against the Yankees. As a coach at the Astros bench last season, Cora had her only other career ejection. He was never ejected during his days of play.
Cora is the first coach to be ejected in the playoffs since Cubs skipper Joe Maddon was eliminated from Games 1 and 4 of the NLCS last year.
