The Washington Redskins may have reached their breaking point in the injury crisis.

Quarterback Alex Smith suffered an ankle injury in the third quarter of Sunday's game against the Houston Texans.

Smith was placed on the right leg after being sacked by Texas cornerback Kareem Jackson and defenseman J.J. Watt. He was excluded for the rest of the match and replaced by substitute Colt McCoy.

The Redskins were already playing with an offensive line brightened by late-season goaltenders Shawn Lauvao and Brandon Scherff. Wide receiver Paul Richardson was also placed on the injured reserve.

Former Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann made a comparison between Smith's injury and his own, 33 years ago, the day he broke his leg against the New York Giants. .

Washington (6-3) started the day with a two-game lead in the east of the NFC.
