Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the new US representative for New York City, has an idea that could make voting easier: Vote for Columbus Day on the federal government's holiday list and replace it with Election Day.
In a tweet on Saturday, the Progressive Democrat asked why Columbus Day was a federal holiday while polling day, as we engage in our most important civic duty, did not do it. ;is not.
After all, Columbus Day celebrates a man who has never set foot in what is now the United States and who certainly has not "discovered" America.
The editor of the Daily Mail, David Martosko, tried to make a joke about Ocasio-Cortez, who "waited for more days of vacation" before even starting his new job.
"Although I disagree with your complaint that Americans have too much vacations …," replied Ocasio-Cortez, "I am willing to compromise by eliminating Columbus Day to grant polling day.
"Do you see?" Added the next congressman. "I can be flexible."
Ocasio-Cortez also noted that Americans worked the longest hours in developed countries and had no paid leave required by the federal government.
Martosko then tweeted: "One of the requirements of the public service should be the sense of humor."
In the past, legislators like Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) Have introduced bills that would make election day a holiday. But with Republicans controlling the Senate and the White House – and not wishing to make voting easier these days – it could be a long shot.
