The town of Waukegan, in Illinois, confirmed Monday on Facebook that she had removed a 4-foot alligator from Lake Michigan.

The city said that a kayaker had seen the alligator swim slowly in Waukegan harbor and had called the police. The Waukegan police's animal control has recovered the alligator, which has turned out to be an American alligator. The alligator was transferred to the Lake Forest Wildlife Discovery Center.

"These creatures are not native, you can imagine the skepticism that goes with it," said David Motley, director of public relations for the city.

Waukegan is about 54 miles south of Milwaukee.
