Earlier this month, Amazon announced plans to invade your home with a large number of new Alexa-based devices designed to make your life easier (and Jeff Bezos much richer). The new products include a multitude of household appliances, ranging from microwaves to electrical outlets.
But what if the company simply built a giant Alexa device for you to live there? Last week, we pondered whether Amazon would start building homes and now the company is doing something like that, with an investment in the Plant Prefab design and prefabrication company.
On Tuesday, the Rialto, California-based company announced it raised $ 6.7 million, funding for the Indepist Ventures Series A, an investment company that funds startups with profits. social and environmental capital company dedicated to investing in companies that "fuel the innovation of voice technology".
Apparently, this includes the prefabricated factory.
"We are going to work with Amazon to integrate Alexa and other smart home technologies they have into our standard home platforms," says Steve Glenn, CEO of Plant Prefab via email. "We will work with them to create technology solutions from Alexa and other smart homes that are better integrated to improve the quality of life and the usefulness of the people who live in the homes we build."
Plant Prefab has been designing prefabricated homes since 2016, when it was created by the Living Homes architectural and real estate development firm. The company describes itself as the first US prefabricated sustainable development plant, and says its technology can reduce construction time by 50 percent and cost from 10 to 25 percent in larger cities. It offers a series of "standard" designs developed by big names in design such as Ray Kappe and Yves Béhar, as well as customized versions. In recent months, Plant Prefab said in a press release that it has installed 26 of its units in California and Utah.
With so many Echo and Alexa compatible devices available, from clocks to subwoofers to TVs, it's easy to say that it's Amazon's world and we live there. Based on its investment in Plant Prefab, this future could be delivered faster than expected.
