Amazon has revealed the names and emails of some customers due to a "technical error", according to the emails that the company has sent to the affected customers. Several people shared screenshots of emails online Wednesday morning. BetaNews first reported the incident.
In a statement, Amazon said: "We have corrected the problem and informed customers that may have been impacted."
Despite the exposure, Amazon told affected customers that they did not need to change their passwords. But even with their names and emails exposed, people might try to reset their accounts or target their emails against phishing attacks.
Amazon did not answer questions about the number of clients affected by the error nor about the duration of disclosure of the information. The website and Amazon's systems have not been violated, said a spokeswoman for Amazon at CNBC. The company did not specify where the customer information was visible.
On a customer forum, users of Amazon's encrypted message were surprised to find that the company did not recommend that they reset their passwords and that the link to Amazon's website in the email signature did not contain secure link containing "https". that "http."
