New York is overwhelmed by the news that Amazon may be setting up its second headquarters in Long Island City, a growing area of Queens. In recent years, the region has experienced an influx of young professionals and new developments, including condominium towers and rental towers.
Soon, Long Island City could accommodate 25,000 employees of Amazon, which will lead to increased economic development and new challenges.
Since the New York Times first announced the arrival of Amazon, residents of Long Island City have voiced their concerns about overcrowded schools, bottled metros and failing infrastructure. These effects could spread to adjacent neighborhoods, including those located on the other side of the East River.
Many Amazon employees will look for real estate in Long Island City, others might be attracted to cheaper neighborhoods like Elmhurst or Jackson Heights, Queens. Many others will cling to the cultural vibrancy of Brooklyn and Manhattan, just minutes away by subway.
