Amazon launches a new Casper style mattress in a box

In the wake of Amazon's first foray into prefabricated construction, the e-commerce giant announced that it would also start selling mattresses.

Spotted for the first time by TJI Research, the new AmazonBasics memory foam mattress is available in the following sizes: twin, full, queen, king and California, as well as in depths of 8, 10 and 12 inches. Prices range from $ 129.99 for the 8-inch twin to $ 349.99 for the 12-inch king.

The mattress is based on the private label Basics, which offers everyday items like batteries and necessities like sheets and bakeware. And while you can order mattresses from other vendors on Amazon, this is the first mattress sold directly by the company.

This decision puts Amazon in direct competition with the many concepts of "mattress in a box" that have emerged since the launch of Casper in 2014. Competitors like Layla offer a double-sided mattress offering the choice between firm and flexible. The Avocado mattress is composed of all non-toxic organic materials. And Eight offers a mattress with smart home integration, which collects data about your rest while you sleep.

AmazonBasics mattresses, however, are much cheaper than the competition. As Business Insider notes, this is an example of Amazon creating its own version of a best-seller third-party merchant on its website, which the Senator Elizabeth Warren and others have criticized.

There is no word yet – since the product is new – if the mattresses are really comfortable. We will have to wait for Amazon's criticism to decide that.
