Amazon announced Tuesday the raising of the minimum wage of all US employees to $ 15 starting next month.
For 2017, the median employee of Amazon earned just under $ 28,500, according to documents filed by the company. Bezos earned $ 1.7 million.
"We listened to our critics, thought about what we wanted to do and decided to lead," Bezos said in a statement. "We are excited about this change and are encouraging our competitors and other major employers to join us."
Its competitor Retail, Target, announced in its press release on the holidays that it would raise the minimum wage to $ 15 by 2020. Walmart announced in January of this year that it would increase its minimum wage at $ 11.
Amazon will also begin to advocate for an increase in the federal minimum wage, the company said.
The announcement comes before Amazon's annual recruitment campaign. Last year, the e-commerce giant announced that it would hire 120,000 temporary employees for the holiday season.
According to a report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, wage growth at the national level recorded the largest increase in economic recovery in August. Payroll gains exceeded expectations and the unemployment rate remained close to the generational gap of 3.9%.
