Amazon started making foam mattresses in a box – Quartz

Here's a tip for mattress makers: do not sleep on Amazon.

The e-commerce giant has launched a new line of "bed-in-a-box" foam mattresses in the AmazonBasics range, ranging from Twin sizes to California King. Not surprisingly, mattresses are also eligible for a two-day free shipping.

These types of mattresses sparked a keen interest after startups such as Casper, Leesa and Tuft & Needle showed that users did not necessarily need to test a mattress in a store before buying it, bedding at home. Foam mattresses are also often cheaper, thus hitting the startups' hotspot of venture capital that can hurt traditional retailers in terms of convenience and price.

Amazon's decision is also a strike against Walmart, which has launched its own chain of mailboxes called Allswell, and against Target's target price chain, which paid Casper $ 75 million.

If you're wondering what the reviews look like, it's probably too early to know. The only two reviews on the mattresses come from Amazon Vine, the company's program that allows reviewers to get free content in exchange for reviewing a new product. At the moment, mattresses have an average of 4.5 stars, which means maybe Amazon will show them early enough in a physical store.
