The futuristic grocery store of Amazon, which is counting on artificial vision and AI to get rid of cashiers at the checkout, will open its second store this year, confirmed the company on Tuesday. "We are excited to bring Amazon Go to 920 5th Avenue in Seattle.The store will open in the fall of 2018," said a spokesman in a statement. The new site has about 70% more square footage than the current store, a bit cramped.
GeekWire reported for the first time signs, including literals, that a Seattle location about a mile from the company's first Amazon Go store was in preparation: a little window masking it was taken off the top of the store being prepared, allowing a peek inside. According to the permits, the new store will be 3,000 square feet; the first store is just 1,800, and has a layout that shows that the store was adapted to the space, rather than the opposite.
The Amazon Go concept replaces cashiers and cashiers with a grab-and-go approach. Customers register by scanning a 2D code from the Amazon Go application when they enter the store. They are then followed by a large number of cameras in the ceiling, which continuously analyze the behavior in the store. When a customer deletes an item from a shelf, the machine-learning based algorithms record the article. Customers simply go out and a receipt is sent later.
The first Amazon Go store opened on the informal business campus north of downtown Seattle. The second location will be about one kilometer from Madison Center, a 36-story building that opened last year in a central part of downtown Seattle.
