The 187 passengers of Flight 663 from American Airlines thought that they were going to heaven, but they had to go through hell to get there.

A problem with the in-flight toilets led flight attendants to inform passengers that they had to urinate in plastic bags and bottles for one-third of the six-hour flight between Phoenix, Arizona and Kona, Hawaii.

"What do you mean I have to pee in a bag?" A passenger can be heard asking in a video of the incident that has been posted online.

"I know, it's horrible," says the flight attendant in the video. "And the guys go in bottles."

The incident came from a diaper that was thrown into one of the toilets, causing problems. Passengers were forced to choose between bottles and bags and hold them for two hours before landing.

"We are really sorry for the problem that caused the 187 passengers on Flight 663," American Airlines said in a statement. "Our customer relations team will endeavor to apologize to all passengers on this flight.

"At American, the toilets must work properly before departure. If an American flight is in flight and all toilets become inoperative, the flight will fly to the nearest airport for maintenance to correct the situation. Due to the location of the aircraft, the flight continued until its intended destination. The question was then corrected upon arrival at Kona and our flight returned to Phoenix as planned.

All passengers on the flight received 30,000 AAdvantage miles, the carrier added. That's enough for a free round trip flight.
