US officials have identified the American soldier who was killed in Afghanistan earlier this week. The Ministry of Defense said Spc. James A. Slape, 23, of Morehead City, North Carolina, was killed Thursday after being injured as a result of injuries. improvised explosive device (IED).
Slape was assigned to 60th Troop Command, National Guard of the North Carolina Army. Officials said he supported Sentinel, Operation Freedom, and that he was posthumously promoted sergeant.
The incident is under investigation.
The governor of North Carolina, Roy Cooper, issued a statement in honor of Slape.
"On behalf of the people of North Carolina, I pay tribute to Sergeant James Slape for the service and sacrifice he offers and expresses his deepest sympathy to his loved ones and fellow soldiers," said Cooper, an affiliate at CBS, WFMY.
Slape joined the National Guard of North Carolina in 2013 and graduated from the School of Explosives in 2015. His unit was deployed to Afghanistan in April this year, reports WFMY.
The US military is focused on supporting Afghan forces in the fight against extremist groups in eastern Afghanistan. There are approximately 14,000 American soldiers in Afghanistan. Seven members of the US service were killed in 2018, reports the Associated Press.
In September, a member of the US military service was killed in an attack of insiders. The incident left another member of the service injured.
